Ali C. Höcek served as an architectural consultant to the Guggenheim’s Exhibitions department in connection with three construction projects – the addition of galleries to Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Fifth Avenue building, the renovations of the Guggenheims’ satellite SoHo location, and Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao. In this capacity, he coordinated between the Exhibitions department and those involved in the construction projects to ensure that the buildings’ renovations met the needs for Guggenheim’s permanent collection and ongoing exhibitions.

Following the completion of the construction projects, he continued to consult with the Guggenheim over the course of several exhibitions in the Guggenheim’s two Manhattan museums. He also designed the building signage at the SoHo venue. This signage received a prestigious design award from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. Among the exhibitions were Mediascape and Robert Rauschenberg: The Early 1950s.

Mediascape was one of the first large exhibitions of digital artworks in New York City. Much of Höcek’s design work was in managing cumbersome electronic equipment while maintaining a fluid narrative for the visitors.

In advising on the design of Robert Rauschenberg: The Early 1950s, Höcek brought together the European formality of enfilade galleries with the neutral and spacious characteristics of a SoHo gallery.

Most notably, Höcek served as executive architect for Zaha Hadid’s exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde, 1915-1932, collaborating with Hadid, his friend and former professor at the Architectural Association, as well as Patrik Schumacher. This work is featured as a separate project on the ACHA website.
